How SCG Evaluates OBD2 Scanners
Scan Choice Guide doesn’t test scanners in a lab, and we don’t pretend to. What we do is verify every fact we publish against a real, documented source, and run every recommendation through the same deterministic logic every time. Here’s exactly how that works.
Where Our Data Comes From
Every scanner in our system starts with facts pulled from official sources: the manufacturer’s own product page or spec sheet, and the exact Amazon listing tied to that specific model. We record where each fact came from and when it was checked, so nothing we publish is a guess dressed up as a fact.
Vehicle compatibility works the same way. Before we say a scanner works with a specific make, model, and generation, that link has to trace back to a real source, whether that’s the manufacturer’s own compatibility documentation or a verified Amazon listing that confirms the same thing.
How We Decide What to Recommend
Once your vehicle and needs are in our system, the Recommendation Engine does the sorting. It’s a fixed set of rules, not an AI model guessing at what might work. Given the same vehicle and the same functions, it returns the same three picks every time: a Budget option, a Best Value option, and a Premium option, each one built from your vehicle’s confirmed compatibility data and the functions you told us you need.
That’s also why you won’t see star ratings or review scores anywhere on this site. We don’t have a legitimate pool of verified customer reviews to draw one from, and making one up would be exactly the kind of fake rating that gets sites penalized and, more importantly, misleads the person reading it.
What “Verified” Actually Means Here
When a scanner review says a function is “verified,” it means we found that function stated on the manufacturer’s own documentation, tied to that model. When we say a vehicle generation is “verified compatible,” it means the same thing on the vehicle side. If we can’t verify something, either because the manufacturer doesn’t publish it or because we haven’t checked it yet, we say so directly instead of leaving a gap that looks like an oversight.
How We Reach Our Results
Our results come from our own research: we analyze manufacturer documentation, Amazon listings, and vehicle compatibility data, and cross-check them against credible independent sources.
Why We Built It This Way
Instead of asking you to take our word for it, we built something you can check. Every compatibility claim, every listed function, and every price reference traces back to a real source. If you want to verify something yourself, the Trusted Sources section at the bottom of each review points you to exactly where that information came from.
